I Am Proud To Be A Woman Because…

Every year, we celebrate women during the month of March and this year is no different. I grew up around a woman who took this month and especially the 8th, very seriously and so I was always aware of the significance of the International Women’ Day which was not the case for some people back then.

Every year, I choose to celebrate women by writing about them specifically. Last year, with other Burundian bloggers we took a challenge and we each wrote an article to/about Burundian women. You can read mine here.

This year, I am talking about the young woman that I am. I put together some – but no all – reasons why I am super duper proud to be a woman.

I am proud to be a woman because I was raised by an incredible woman who while working full-time and traveling a lot never ceased to be a present and caring mother.

I am proud to be a woman because “I bleed every month, but do not die. How am I not magic? ”—Nayyirah Waheed

I am proud to be a woman because my heart is magical. I’ve been hurt so bad but I still love so hard.

I am proud to be a woman because in this world that is so divisive, I always find ways to stay united with my sisters. Isn’t it at the core of womanhood?

I am proud to be a woman because even though as a woman of colour I don’t always feel celebrated, I never stop shining and glowing in all ways.

I am proud to be a woman because I understand that my strength resides in my ability to be vulnerable and cry at times but always keep my head up no matter what.

I am proud to be a woman because along with other women, I fight for inclusion and seek equality and I strive to end injustice in the world.

I am proud to be a woman because I do not allow my fears, my insecurities, my weaknesses and the opinions of others on me get in the way of my fights for what I care about

I am proud to be a woman because I fully understand that “it is not my responsibility to be beautiful. I’m not alive for that purpose. My existence is not about how desirable you find me.” – Warsan Shire

I am proud to be a woman because the stories that I will tell my children about womanhood and how far we’ve come are stories full of hope, resilience, diligence, love and empathy.

Let’s be honest, being a woman is kickass! Think about all the things we are capable of. If you are reading this and you are a young woman, well I hope you were able to relate to this and don’t forget to tell me why you’re so proud to be a woman.

  1. I am proud to be a woman because I am raising feminist sons at a young age. I believe that teaching kids to respect people of all age and GENDER starts at home.
P.s: Thank you for reminding us that woman is beautiful❤
